The concept of Suicide in Islam Suicide is a short word, yet can it can be a very touchy and very popular topic. Suicide is when someone kills themselves on purpose. Suicidal behavior is any act that can cause a person to die. such as taking drugs, poison etc. There are about 30,000 suicides in the United States today. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescent ages 15 through 24. Nearly 60% of all 30,000 suicides involves a firearm. There are twice as many suicides as there are homicides in this country! Suicide is committed every 17 minutes. Suicide is considered a permanent solution to a temporary problem, which is why many people find that as their only escape and eventually commit it. The word suicide comes from the Latin roots of sui (of oneself) and Cidium which mean (killing/slaying). Euthanasia, also known as assisted suicide is when doctors take away a patient s life in order to end the SUFFERING/pain, euthanasia is considered mercy killing but I think its just as awful as actual suicide. According to Emile Durkheim s theory ; there are four types of suicide, Egoistic, Altruistic, Anomic, and Fatalistic suicide. EGOISTIC (selfish) suicide occurs after someone has a lack of social integration and is not supported in a social group. When someone feels like they don’t belong somewhere and the only person they have in their life is themselves; when someone is lonely.
